Four checks that decide whether a secondhand price is fair

Search the completed listings, not the live ones

Live asking prices tell you what sellers hope for. Sold prices tell you what buyers paid — that is the number to negotiate against.

Work out what it cost new, then halve it

Most electronics and furniture lose roughly half their value in the first year and settle slowly after that. A seller quoting near-new prices is anchoring.

Ask the boring questions

Battery health on phones and laptops, service history on bikes, and whether flat-pack furniture has been moved twice. These decide the real value more than condition labels do.

Meet in daylight, in public, and pay on collection
